Vermaelen to undergo surgery

Vermaelen to undergo surgery and miss four-five months

Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen will have an operation to correct a thigh problem next week and is expected to be out for four to five months, the La Liga club said on Thursday.
The Belgium centre back, who sustained the injury playing against Russia at the World Cup in June, has yet to make his competitive debut after joining from Arsenal in August and his signing has become something of an embarrassment for the Barca board.
"Vermaelen to undergo surgery in Finland next week," Barca said on their website (www.fcbarcelona.es). "The estimated recovery time is four to five months."
Vermaelen, 29, has struggled with injury since joining Arsenal from Ajax Amsterdam in 2009.
He sustained an Achilles injury in 2010 followed by a series of other niggling problems and featured only 21 times for the London club last season.

He was meant to help bolster Barca's defence but unable to make a appearance this season.

Messi breaks Raúl's Champions League goal record

Lionel Messi has overtaken Raúl González to become the top scorer in UEFA Champions League history with a hat-trick in FC Barcelona's game at APOEL FC.

Lionel Messi has surpassed Raúl González's record as the top scorer in UEFA Champions League history in FC Barcelona's game at APOEL FC.

The forward scored his 72nd goal in the competition proper, group stage to final, 38 minutes in at APOEL to put Barcelona 2-0 up, diverting Rafinha's effort past goalkeeper Urko Pardo. He subsequently added two more.
While it took Raúl 142 UEFA Champions League outings to run up his 71 goals, Messi's appearance against APOEL was his 91st in the competition. Cristiano Ronaldo, set to face FC Basel 1893 on Wednesday with Real Madrid CF, has 70 strikes in 107 tournament matches.

Messi's goal also ensured he overtook Raúl and Ronaldo, until tonight the joint-top European Cup scorers alongside the Argentinian. Whereas Messi and Raúl's goals all came in the competition proper, Ronaldo found the net for Manchester United FC in the third qualifying round back in 2005. In terms of UEFA club competitions, Raúl remains out in front with 77

Lionel Messi surpasses Telmo Zarra as La Liga's all-time top scorer

Lionel Messi surpasses Telmo Zarra as La Liga's all-time top scorer

Lionel Messi broke Telmo Zarra’s long standing record of 251 goals in the La Liga to create history with a hat-trick in Barcelona’s 5-1 win against Sevilla. Entering the match on 250 goals, the Argentine equalled the record with a beautiful free-kick in the 21st minute, surpassed it with a sliding finish after a one-two with Neymar in the 76th minute and then completed his hat-trick with a shot at the edge of the box. Previous holder Zarra was an Athletic Bilbao legend who had scored 251 goals in 277 games.

Rival Cristiano Ronaldo, who is having a phenomenal season, is 9th on the all-time list. He has 197 goals at a staggering 1.12 goals per game average. Messi was felicitated by his club and was given a video tribute after the game on the giant screen.

The Nou Camp chanted his name, his team-mates threw him up into the air, giving him the bumps. Messi walked towards the tunnel, clutching the match ball. Before he was allowed to leave, the Barcelona team stood by his side, watching a video of his goals and clips of his former team-mates and coaches hailing him.

Messi looked taken aback, almost sheepish as some of his greatest moments were played out to the 78,000 spectators. But he also looked happy. Despite his comments earlier this week, suggesting his future may lie elsewhere, it’s almost impossible to see him leaving his home here. The other
Barcelona players gave him a guard of honour as he left the field.
